With all new technology coming out, manufacturers have made an option for your TVs to be updated through softwares.
You can update Sony TVs using either a USB flash driver or in the newer models you can simply update it directly through the Sony server, if your TV is connected to the internet.
You should be able to find most of the updates online on Sony’s website. For further information, please click here.
This is a good feature to have in your TV which keeps your TV updated with latest software releases. However, we have observed some issues where customers have tried updating the software and the TV has not turned on after that OR after the update is stuck in a standby loop. Now one can easily say that the TV has gone faulty after the software update so the manufacturer are to blame and they should cover the repair. That is correct but when you download the software from the manufacturer’s website, it does state in the terms that the manufacturer will not be liable for any damage it may cause to the TV. Especially if the TV was turned off during the update.
There is no turning back from this point and customers have to repair their sets by replacing the Main board (most of the times), or other times some engineers can manage to re-flash the main board memory which can help. But it is an inconvenience nonetheless, and some engineers may charge a bit excessively for their expertise and time.
We brought this issue up because we have observed this issue recently in some Sony models like the 8509C series. Most of these models that came in to our workshop for repair ended up having their main boards replaced. And to add more injury to the matter, these boards are not cheap. We do not have any alternatives to this problem yet but will definitely publish here as soon as something comes up.
Our recommendation for the time being is to avoid updating manually where possible. We know it does not help you but we or you as a consumer have no other option.
